I agree with the critics that the music is almost sickeningly catchy -- pop riffs, infectious drum beats, and simple hooks that you just can't get out of your head.<br /><br />The lyrics, on the other hand, are enough to give the father of a tween high blood pressure. I don't think that "I Kissed a Girl" is nearly as worrisome as "If You Can Afford Me" or "Waking Up In Vegas" ("I lost my fake ID / But you lost our hotel key"). <br /><br />But I got to thinking about the songs that we listened to when I was 12-15. While there was lots of pop, there was also Frank Zappa's "Dyno-Mo Humm" and "Catholic Girls" and of course the shock rock of many like Ozzie (before he became a reality TV star). And the thrill of those songs was knowing how our parents would not approve. <br /><br />As far as I know none of my friends ever emulated these stars by biting the heads off bats or trying to grow dental floss in Montana. <br /><br />So I am going to continue to listen, and I am going to continue to talk to Amy about her musical choices. First expanded Megalon (my Windows Home Server) to from 1 TB to 2 TB total internal storage. Then upgraded Megalon's RAM from 0.5 GB to 2 GB. This made a huge performance improvement (wow). So it was worth having to completely disassemble Megalon just to get to the HP475's memory slot (remove the top cover, remove all 4 drives, remove the drive connector daughterboard, remove the mesh front cover using a #00 Phillips screwdriver, remove two more screws, remove the motherboard, replace the RAM, then reverse your steps).<br /><br /><br />Then I set up Beth's new laptop, which replaces our aging Dell desktop as the Kitchen Computer, probably the single most-used computer in the house. That went mostly OK, although it glitched a bit when I realized that I couldn't set up offline folders in Vista Home Premium (even though setting up My Docs folder redirection IS allowed, and is painful without offline copying). I'll need to upgrade to Vista Ultimate to fix that one.<br /><br /><br />Finally moved Kitchen PC out (mostly... it got as far as the kitchen island) and set it up with a Linksys USB wireless card (since the new location doesn't have a network tap). This didn't go well; the network keeps dropping and won't reaquire until about 5 minutes AFTER someone logs on (by which time they've probably noticed that their My Docs folder is gone). I think I need a different wireless card for that one. I tell you, Linksys did not endear themselves to me when their software replaced the GINA, and in the process disabled fast user switching in XP. Now I know the solution is to move to Vista but I have been resisting that because of all the reinstalling I'd have to do. I may try for an upgrade and hope for the best.<br /><br /><br />And that was about it. I didn't get the Zune docking station set up (for my kids to download shows from the Tivo to their Zunes) although I hope to get to that later this week. And I still need to get a new wireless card for that old Dell. That went so smoothly I had to check several times to make sure it really worked. The whole thing took less than 10 minutes. <br /><br />Now I have a server with <strong>too much </strong>storage, so I tried to remove one of the external drives from the storage pool (to use it for external backup instead). That went... not so well. There is a great admin tool for removing drives, which checks to make sure that there aren't any open files on the drive that you're about to remove. And it reported that there were some files open (a grand total of two). However, try as I might I can't figure out what application has these files open. I suspect that it might be <a href="http://www.mesh.com/">Live Mesh </a>but I haven't confirmed that yet. So I still haven't been able to get that drive removed.<br /><br />I've had an interesting time trying to decide how to manage documents with my work laptop and all of the PCs in our house. Here's what I ended up with:<br /><ul><li>All users on all PCs in the house have their My Documents folder redirected to the server.</li><li>To increase availability, that share is set to be available offline as well -- so if the server or router is not working the user still has their My Documents folder. </li><li>I run a copy of Live Mesh on the server -- since it is not yet available as a service I run it from the Administrator's context (<a href="http://www.liveside.net/main/archive/2008/07/28/forcing-live-mesh-on-windows-server-it-works.aspx">details</a>). All Mesh syncing happens from this copy of Mesh.</li><li>All PCs get backed up every night, and <u>all</u> shared folders are duplicated (which is why I need 2 TB of storage). Shared folders are also backed up every couple of weeks.</li><li>However there is also a category of files that are so critical I can't risk losing them. This includes photos (our family history), music (because it is expensive to replace) and some personal files. So for these I use triple redundancy: the files are duplicated (physically exist on two separate server drives), then are backed up to an external drive, and are also backed up to Amazon.com's Simple Storage Service using <a href="http://www.jungledisk.com/homeserver/index.aspx">Jungle Disk</a>. Right now I am paying about $18/month for that peace of mind. </li></ul><p>This works and is mostly automatic. The Jungle Disk storage is expensive, but only because I have over 100 GB copied up there. ICS is a "choice school"... and Amy managed to choose the school that is as far away from home as possible while staying in the same school district. That means taking a 50-minute shuttle bus ride 10 miles from the local junior high to her school every morning. Hence the routine: Up at 5:30 am, then meet Amy in the kitchen at 6 for a quick breakfast and coffee (me) or chai tea (her). Out the door at 6:20 and drop her off at the bus stop at 6:30. Then I have the whole morning free. Monday, Wednesday and Friday I work out at the gym, and Tuesday and Thursday I go into work early. <br /><br />The great thing about this is that Amy and I get 30 minutes to chat in the morning. She really is a very cool kid and I feel like she's matured two years in the week since she started school. I am sure that this is the honeymoon period -- there's not a lot of pressure at school yet and homework is just starting to ramp up. But I'm enjoying it for right now.<br /><br />And it gets me to the gym more often. I've seen similar techniques used individually, and in fact MSR has some alpha software out there, but this is the first time I've seen it all put together. It requires creativity and technical knowledge to get a great result. I asked both kids which hero they would want to be if they had the choice (each "hero" has different powers). First they chose Sylar and Peter -- because their power is to absorb everyone else's powers. After I took that one off the table Amy said, "I'd be that girl in the restaurant who can remember everything." When I asked her why, she said, "Because then I'd be super-smart and I'd be able to get a scholarship and get into Harvard and not have to pay."<br /><br />Now this is coming from a girl who is pretty darn smart, but who also has never talked about college... I don't think she even knows where Harvard is. And suddenly I find that I'm trying to justify in my own mind why I "need" that $2000 lens or that $1000 tripod. Yikes! It's very easy to fall into the "if only" habit: "If only I had a super-telephoto lens I could capture that shot perfectly." We were able to clean out the house, arrange for the auctioneer to take the rest opf the stuff, list the house for sale, show the house (14 times), sell the house after getting two offers, cancel the phone service and return the DSL mode. Finally, as we were driving to the airport we got a call that the a friend wanted to buy Dad's car. So we detoured to his place and sold the car as well! Phew -- all in 5.5 days. In no particular order: Expodisc white balance tool. A longer lens, either the Nikon 300mm f/4 or the Sigma 100-300 f/4 (need to see a review of the Sigma to decide). A faster telephoto, like the Nikon 135 f/2 DC, which looks like fun -- the reviews say if you leave DC off (set to 0) it's reasonably sharp and might also make a good indoor sports lens. A macro lens, maybe the Nikon 105 f/2.8 VR. A circular polarizing filter. A 2-stop hard grad, and a 3-stop soft, probably for a Cokin holder so I can use on multiple lenses. A 1.4x teleconverter for that 300mm lens. Photomatix HDR software. A Hoodman HoodLoupe Pro, sao I can chimp in broad daylight -- I can barely see the histograms out here right now. A camera backpack that can carry my tripod. Amy rode her bike to pace me, and I more or less followed Galloway's system -- walking for 1 minute after every 4 minutes of running. It definitely helped me run faster, but the walk breaks resulted in a much slowwer than usual time so I'll keep trying to fine tune it. Even if these sites require payment of some kind they're usually worth it. These sites will almost invariably be ruined by some well-meaning product manager who can't leave well enough alone.<br /><br />Active.com (http://active.com) is one of those. It used to be a directory of sports events. I used to use it to find half marathons I wanted to run. Like, "show me all of the half marathons in the state of Washington in September 2008". You could view the event web site, you could register for the event, everything was on one page, it was great. It even remembered my shirt size and who else I usually registered (my wife, for example).<br /><br />But I can just picture the conversation that went on a year or so ago: "We have all this traffic, and we're making OK money on the registrations, but it isn't sticky. If we could get people to come to our site and stay there we'd be able to make more money on ads. How can we convert this registration traffic into a community that we could better monetize with targeted ads?"<br /><br />So active tried to reinvent itself with articles, training plans, and so much crap that (a) it's now difficult to even find events, and (b) event organizers are bailing out and listing their events on more runner-friendly sites such as Athlete's Lounge (http://ping.fm/wm1On). Now active is a has-been site with articles I don't want to read and training plans that aren't as good as the ones that were already available from a lot of other sources such as Hal Higdon (http://ping.fm/t8heV), Jeff Galloway (http://ping.fm/38m8r) or Runners' World (http://ping.fm/xAu6d). So off I go to other sites, leaving what used to be a great resource to die on the vine.
